Friday Favs

Happy Friday, y'all! I've had a fabulous, productive week! Here's what I've been up to/loving this week.

I finally got a new desk chair and I am loving it! I had been using a cushioned dinning room chair from Pier One that was so pretty, but it definitely wasn't meant to be used as a desk chair. I couldn't figure out why my back kept hurting and then I realized it was the chair! I work a ton in my home office, during the summer especially, so I went on the hunt for a comfy chair. I don't love the look of an office chair, but I decided to sacrifice looks for comfort! :) It was on clearance too, so I took it as a sign that it was meant to be.

I snapped this pic one morning this week because I realized I have spent the majority of the last part of this week in my PJs! I have been working nonstop (anyone get the Hamilton reference!?) this week in my office on all things teaching so comfy clothes are a must! I LOVE these PJ shorts from Old Navy!

I snapped this pic to share this adorable flamingo sweatshirt with y'all. I moved my desk to my window in the office, but it's right next to an air vent so I keep warm clothes to bundle up with and I've been loving this sweatshirt! And of course, coffee is always a Friday fav!

Is this not the prettiest eyeshadowever?? Granted, there aren't a lot of opportunities to wear glitter eye shadow in my life, but I'm going to definitely work it in somehow! ;)

Sunday morning breakfast with a side of LaLa Land. I just can't get enough of this movie. Love, love, love!

Look at these tassel earrings! I ordered the exact same pair from Baublebar in purple in late spring and then I found these at TJ Maxx and they look exactly the same!

Target. All time fav! I've currently stalking the Dollar Spot for the back to school/teacher stuff to come out! They still didn't have them out on my last trip, but don't worry! I found some things I definitely didn't know I needed!

This week has been the best in terms of reading! I read One of Us Is Lying and absolutely LOVED it! It just might be my favorite book of 2017 so far. If you want a post of all my favs from the year so far, let me know!

Then I read When It's Real and was so surprised at how much I loved it! I mean, I HATED Erin Watt's last book but I love, love love this one! Another favorite of 2017 maybe?

I've been using this lower lash mascara for the longest time and I just love it. It makes applying makeup to your bottom lashes so much easier!

Another favorite beauty product that I've recently discovered. This Micellar Cleansing Water does the best job at taking off your makeup! I had been using the Garnier, but this L'Oreal one is so much better!

I went to Barnes and Noble last weekend and came away with tons of great new books for my classroom, including this one about 10 amazing women written by the amazing Chelsea Clinton. A definite fav!

And finally, this week I've discovered the soundtrack to the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. It's been my go to soundtrack for working away in my office. Obsessed!

So that's been some of my favs from the week. Happy weekend, y'all!

National Watch Day

Happy Tuesday, y'all! So apparently yesterday was National Watch Day. Did y'all know that? LOL! I love these fun off beat holidays and the fact that it involves one of my favorite accessories just makes it that much better. It's also perfect timing because I'm working with JORD Watches to share this amazingly gorgeous wood watch that I am currently obsessed with and wearing nonstop! I'm all about a unique watch and these are just fabulous!

Now when it comes to watches, the bigger the better in my opinion! I love a watch with a big face, so when I saw the Frankie collection from JORD, I knew it was the collection for me. I just love the unique wooden band on these watches. I decided to pair it in an unexpected way with feminine, preppy details like the pineapple and pearl bracelet along with the pink gingham button up and tote. I think these details make the watch stand out in a fun way and the navy face completes the eye catching look!
JORD has men's watches and women's watches. They have tons of different color choices and wood grains. I am dying over this one!
You can even have engraving added to any watch! And as we all know, watches make for a fabulous engraved gift!

Let's take a peek inside to see what it comes with! First of all, can we talk about this gorgeous box? I don't normally keep watch boxes because they take up so much space, but I may need to find something to repurpose this one!

I'm a sucker for good packaging and I was throughly impressed with this one! I love the burlap cushion inside the box with the black embroidered JORD label.

You also get a cleaning pen and cloth, which I really appreciate! It also comes with extra links to use if you need to extend the watch or replace any links later on. You can even ensure you get the correct size by using their wrist measuring tool! Let me tell you, this was the best invention ever! I HATE when you order something online and it arrives and doesn't fit. I'm awful about sending things back, not to mention it's time consuming! This simple little PDF is a handy way to prevent this issue from coming up!

Now, here's the best part! JORD Watches and I are teaming up to give away a $100 E Gift Code to use towards one of their gorgeous watches! One winner will be chosen to win the $100 E Gift Code, but EVERY entrant will receive a $25 E Gift Code to use on their site! How fabulous is that??
The contest will end July 16th, 2017 at 11:50pm, so there's plenty of time to enter!

Binge Worthy Netflix Shows

Friends, I don't want to sound ungrateful towards summer break, but our Alabama weather has been less than ideal. It's been rainy/cloudy for pretty much the last two weeks. Y'all know... the type of depressing, dreary weather. It's just awful! All I want to do is lay out and soak up the sun, but sadly that just isn't happening yet. All this weather is good for is laying around reading and watching Netflix. Since I already have multiple posts about books, I decided to share some of my favorite TV shows/mini series with y'all in case y'all are having the same depressing weather, too! I'd love to hear your favorite shows!

Gilmore Girls

If you've followed me on Instagram for awhile, you may remember that last summer I became obsessed with Gilmore Girls. Oh man, what a show! There are SO MANY good characters and Stars Hollow might be my favorite fictional setting of all time. I could kick myself for not watching this one sooner. And I dare you not to fall in love with Logan Huntzberger. I don't even want to hear about Dean or Jess. Team Logan all the way!

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is one of my all time favorites. I love all the fashion that comes with the show. Seasons 1 and 2 are by far the best. And yes, the show does go downhill in the later seasons, but it's still a great show to binge watch! I adore Blair and Chuck.

Scandal

Scandal is SUCH an addicting show! I'm behind two seasons, so I'll definitely be using this summer to catch up. I binge watched seasons 1-4 several years ago and then started watching in real time on Thursday nights. Olivia Pope is such a strong female character and I've even grown to love Millie even though I use to hate her! There's a love triangle in this one between Olivia, Jake, and President Fitz and I'm team Fitz all the way! I cannot stand Jake. At all.

How to Get Away with Murder

This show! If there was an award for most binge worthy, this show would win! You cannot stop watching this one. Every time an episode would end, I would find myself saying "Just one more and then I'll get up and do something." Sooooo addicting!

The Office

The Office is my favorite show of all time. I LOVE it! There are so many funny parts and quotes to take away from this show.

"That's what she said"
"I don't want people to be afraid of me. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."
"Bears. Beets, Battlestar Galactica"
"Did I stutter?"
"Dwight. You Ignorant Slut!"
"I'm not superstitious. I'm a little-stitious"
"Soupsnakes"

and my favorite...
"Sometimes I'll start a sentence and I don't even know where it's going. I just hope I find it along the way"

Michael Scott is one of my favorite fictional characters ever. This is a show you can just have playing in the background while you work, clean, etc. It is the best! Be sure and check out the bloopers on youtube after you watch each season. They are almost as funny as the actual show!

Riverdale
Riverdale is a new show I've been watching and I am obsessed! It's based off the Archie comics, so it has all the characters from that comic strip: Betty, Veronica, Archie, Jughead, etc. I've never read any of the comics, so I didn't think I'd like the show, but I was wrong. It is so good!

Glee

Glee is another favorite of mine! Seasons 1 and 2 are definitely the best. Season 3 is the characters' senior year and it's okay and then seasons 4,5,6 are just awful. I love musicals so this show is right up my alley! Once they separate the characters though, the storylines aren't as strong and it's just not the same. And then Corey Monteith passed away and the show just never recovered. The early seasons are still classic though!

Stranger Things

This show was one I never thought I would get into. Sci fi is NOT my thing, but then I kept hearing people talk about the show and I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I totally get it now. This show is fabulous! I cannot wait for season two to come out in October.

13 Reasons Why

Oh man, this show is addicting, but painful to watch. I read the book by Jay Asher years ago when it first came out and I remember loving it. I was anxious to watch the Netflix series and it did not disappoint. There are so many tough scenes to watch, but it is still such a good show! Season 2 is already confirmed and I cannot wait.
Making A Murderer

True crime fans, this show is for you! My mom and I watched this one back during Christmas and I think we finished the entire miniseries in a day. This show will leave you so conflicted. One episode I was convinced that he really did it and the next I was convinced that the cops planted evidence to frame him. So good!

Lost

I binged watched this show several summers ago and it's remained a favorite ever since. It's a strange show and definitely one you have to pay attention to or you'll be lost and I still don't understand the ending, but it's addicting!

Crazy Ex Girlfriend

Okay, this one is a silly show, but I loved season 1! I tried watching season 2 in real time, but it wasn't as good so I stopped watching but the first season is great! It's another musical, but with original songs that are so catchy! I loved it!

Okay, so those are my favorite binge worthy tv shows! I'd love to hear y'alls!

May Reading Recap

Y'all, I am almost ashamed to publish my May reading recap because I had such a sorry reading month. May and August are hands down my busiest months because of teaching and reading suffered because of school! Majorly suffered. I reread two books and only read two new books. 4 books, y'all! Really only 2 since the first ones were rereads. Definitely not the best month. June is already looking better, though! I can't wait to share with y'all what all I've read in June because I'm currently writing this on June 4th and I've already read 2 fabulous books!

Okay, let's get on with my May reading recap!

The first three books were all part of the To All the Boys I've Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han. I reread the first two before reading the newest and final book in the series. I did an entire post on this series here if you want to hear about them. Spoiler Alert: it's one of my favorite series of all time and the last book did NOT disappoint!

And then the only other book I read this month was Fireworks by Kate Cotugno. This one was about two friends in the 90's who move to Orlando to be a part of a girl band. They all live in an apartment complex with members of a boy band. I originally gave it a 4 out of 5 stars, but then I changed it to a 3 out of 5. It was just okay. I didn't really connect with any of the characters and the ending was sort of open ended. I much preferred the author's other book 99 Days to this one.

Well, that was short and sweet, right?? Oh well, some months are just crazy busy while others seem to have all the time in the world. Happy summer reading, y'all!

LaLa Life Book Club Intro

Hey y'all! I'm so excited that summer is officially here and there's much more time for fun stuff like reading! I've decided that it's the perfect time to start a book club. This is something I've wanted to do for awhile now and I think it could really be fun!

So you're probably here from my Instagram post, which had a few details in it, but I'll go into it a little more here. So here's what you do:

1) If you want to participate, comment on my Instagram picture with your book choice #. I'll have a short description of each book below if you want to research to see which sounds best to you. I've never read any of these so I'm excited for any of them!
(June's theme: summer! Duh!)

2) I'll tally up the votes and announce the winning book on Wednesday.

3) Once we've decided on a book, it's time to read! You can post your own pictures and thoughts or just comment on my pictures. Whatever gets us discussing the books! Just be sure and use the hashtag #lalalifebookclub so that everyone that is participating that month can follow along.

4) If you have an Instagram account and don't really post pictures but still want to participate, just comment on others! The goal is to talk about the book!

So now that we have that out of the way, let's find our very first book!

When Katie Doyle moves across the country to the Hamptons, she is hoping for summer employment, new friends for her young son, and a chance to explore a new love affair with a dazzling investor. What she finds is a strange cocktail of classes, where society’s one-percenters vacation alongside local, hard-working people who’ve lived in the Hamptons for generations. Though she’s looking forward to their move, Katie is wary about mingling with her boyfriends’ East Coast elite circles. She soon discovers Southampton isn’t all that it seems to be on the surface—and neither are the people who live there.

As George takes Katie on a whirlwind tour of country clubs, haute couture, and lavish events, she is amazed to witness sudden whims become dire needs, extra-marital affairs blossoming right and left, and people purchase friends and loyalties like a pair of shoes. Even the middle-class townspeople maintain a determined façade while maneuvering like sharks among the wealthy summer invaders.

The more Katie becomes immersed, the more she learns the secrets of both the upstairs and downstairs, the upper crust and middle of the road. The combustion between the classes becomes explosive as the summer tears on. Betrayals, a sexual predator, and a missing person lost in murky waves drive the reader on a racing Learjet ride through impossible twists and turns until landing at the shocking conclusion. When she meets Luke, a local surfer and middle school teacher, he makes her question what it is she really wants as she understands the life she’s begun for herself is built on shifting Hamptons’ dunes.

Book Choice #2 Slightly South of Simple

Caroline Murphy swore she’d never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father’s death, her mother selfishly forced her to move—during her senior year of high school, no less—back to that hick-infested rat trap where she'd spent her childhood summers. But now that her marriage to a New York high society heir has fallen apart in a very public, very embarrassing fashion, a pregnant Caroline decides to escape the gossipmongers with her nine-year-old daughter and head home to her mother, Ansley.

Ansley has always put her three daughters first, especially when she found out that her late husband, despite what he had always promised, left her with next to nothing. Now the proud owner of a charming waterfront design business and finally standing on her own two feet, Ansley welcomes Caroline and her brood back with open arms. But when her second daughter Sloane, whose military husband is overseas, and youngest daughter and successful actress Emerson join the fray, Ansley begins to feel like the piece of herself she had finally found might be slipping from her grasp. Even more discomfiting, when someone from her past reappears in Ansley's life, the secret she’s harbored from her daughters their entire lives might finally be forced into the open.

Exploring the powerful bonds between sisters and mothers and daughters, this engaging novel is filled with Southern charm, emotional drama, and plenty of heart.

Book Choice #3 On the Island

When thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family's summer rental in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation; a working vacation on a tropical island trumps the library any day.

T.J. Callahan has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He's almost seventeen and if having cancer wasn't bad enough, now he has to spend his first summer in remission with his family - and a stack of overdue assignments -- instead of his friends.

Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.'s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Adrift in shark-infested waters, their life jackets keep them afloat until they make it to the shore of an uninhabited island. Now Anna and T.J. just want to survive and they must work together to obtain water, food, fire, and shelter.

Their basic needs might be met but as the days turn to weeks, and then months, the castaways encounter plenty of other obstacles, including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the possibility that T.J.'s cancer could return. As T.J. celebrates yet another birthday on the island, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.

Book Choice #4 The Lake Season

Set in the weeks leading up to an idyllic New England wedding, this “enticing and refreshing” (Nancy Thayer, New York Times bestselling author) novel sparkles with wry wit, sweet romance, and long-kept family secrets.

Iris Standish has always been the responsible sister: the one who studied hard, settled down, and always made the right choices—even when they came at the expense of her passions. Meanwhile, her sister Leah dropped out of college to “find herself” by hiking through Yellowstone and switches jobs nearly as often as she switches lovers, leaving Iris to pick up the pieces in her wake.

But now Iris’s life is coming apart at the seams, and when Leah calls her back to their childhood home with a desperate cry for help, she is thrust headfirst into preparations for her sister’s wedding to a man their New Hampshire clan has never met…with her own marriage and family on the brink.

Still, despite the rush of dress fittings, floral arrangements, and rehearsal dinners, Iris is learning to put herself first. And amid a backdrop of late-night swims and a soul-restoring barn renovation comes Cooper Woods, a high school crush who beckons with the promise of a new start.

While Leah faces a past that has finally caught up to her, Iris prepares to say goodbye to a future that is suddenly far from certain. As Hampstead Lake shimmers in the background, Iris must decide when to wade in cautiously and when to dive—and, ultimately, how to ferry herself to safe harbors in this “glittering…memorable” novel of second chances and the ties that bind

Book Choice #5 On the Rocks

Six months ago, Abby's life fell apart for all the world to see. Her longtime boyfriend-turned-fiancé, Ben, unceremoniously dumped her—on Facebook—while she was trying on dresses for the big day.

When the usual remedies—pints of Ben & Jerry's, sweatpants, and a comfy couch—fail to work their magic, her best friend, Grace, devises a plan to get Abby back on her game. She and Abby are going to spend the summer in Newport, in a quaint cottage by the sea, enjoying cool breezes, cocktails, and a crowd of gorgeous men.

But no matter how far away they go, Abby and Grace discover that in the era of social media—when everyone is preserving every little detail of their lives online—there is no real escape. Dating has never been easy. But now that the rules are more blurred than ever, how will they find true love? And even if they do, can romance stand a chance when a girl's every word and move can go viral with a single click?
